DOVER

Dover is a suburban gem, physically marked by the presence of the mighty Charles River and its magnificent landscape. A semi-rural domain, Dover is friendly, laidback, and surprisingly adept at maintaining its environment and having one of the finest school systems in the Boston area. In fact, in 2004, Dover-Sherborn Regional High School was ranked the eighth best in Massachusetts out of about 150 schools in the state.* Another bonus,  according to Boston Magazine**, is that Boston is graded by HealthNetwork.com as the fourth healthiest out of 50 major cities studied; and Massachusetts is overall, according to the United Health Foundation, the third healthiest state.  Dover is ranked  the healthiest town in the state.***

Classic Colonial in Dover
With one traffic light in the entire town, approximately 6,000 residents and no numbered routes, Dover remains peaceful and bucolic, a cycling and kayaking/canoeing mecca, about 16 miles from downtown Boston, but only four minutes from the north side to Wellesley shopping and public transportation; and a few minutes east is the Needham train to Boston.  Dover may look like the quintessential country town, but it is fueled by the second highest median household income in the state (after Weston).

The relatively high average home price is
$ 1,227,000****, but the range is broad, with offerings in 2005 from about $ 500,000 to $ 6,500.000; and the styles include classic colonials, antique or modern, to fine contemporaries, secluded or in emerging developments.  Land, lushly forested and open meadow, is key with one or two-acre zoning being average; and half of Dover’s 15 square miles being forested. Horse properties abound in Dover and occasionally are marketed.

Resources include Isabella’s for an old-fashioned soda fountain, and the Dover Market which cuts one of the best steaks in the western suburbs. Doverites are happy to leave behind traffic congestion and noise when they cross the border; and the spring Fishing Derby on Channing Pond for school children, and the summer Concerts on the Town Common are about as exciting as it gets in this country town.
